This view of a distant town on a river may show Bacharach, situated on the Rhine close to Burg Sooneck (Tate D30655; Turner Bequest CCCIV 13). The spire could be that of St Peter’s Church with the ruins of Werner’s Chapel to the left. There is also a very rough inscription dashed off at rear which reads ‘B[...]ack’.
