This is a view of the village of Kaub, situated on the banks of the Rhine in Germany. It is dominated by the medieval Burg Gutenfels, seen on the cliff at right. Kaub’s toll castle, the Pfalz, is located on a small river island at centre. The castle was erected in the fourteenth century for the purposes of exacting taxes from passing river traffic.
