This is a work of imagination, but was inspired by the bands of musicians one used to see before the war in the villages of Eastern Europe. Mané-Katz made many similar paintings of musicians, though the later works were more abstracted and simplified in treatment (the artist in letters of 9 and 23 January 1960).
