Inscribed ‘SAPPHO’ on a scroll bottom left and ‘ss [in monogram]/14 4/62’
Pencil on paper, 10 1/8 × 8 1/2 (26.6 × 21)
Purchased from the Christopher Wood Gallery (Grant-in-Aid) 1980
Prov: ...; purchased from Durlacher Gallery, New York, c.1965, by Van Deren Coke, on whose behalf sold by Christopher Wood 1980.
Solomon used this study for the head of Sappho in his watercolour of ‘Sappho and Erinna’, T03063 above. However, as it bears a date nearly two years earlier than the watercolour, the drawing may not have been made with the latter in mind.
