Grand or panoramic views of cities were traditional subjects for topographical art (the accurate representation of specific places in sharp details). In this image Turner departs dramatically from that tradition by showing his native city barely visible through shrouds of mist and smoke.

Here, the metropolis is conceived as a place of immensity, drama and uncertainty; these qualities, as much as the detail of the paddle-steamer on the left, mark London as specifically modern.
