With the page turned horizontally, Turner locates this view of the cathedral as from the ‘Canal au Beurre’ running between Boterrui and Appelstraat. The canal is indicated here by a bridge. Shown on eighteenth-century maps of Antwerp, the canal is now filled in and the Boterrui is incorporated into the Suikerrui, for which see folio 3 recto (D13000). Turner notes a statue near the bridge and figures in the street. The tower of the cathedral and upper parts of buildings are continued on folio 3 verso opposite (D13001). For Antwerp in this sketchbook, see notes to folio 2 verso (D12999).
