This sketch forms part of a double-page view of Folkestone Harbour that continues on the folio 16 recto opposite (D35291). Turner’s attention here is focused on the new Harbour House. Italianate in style, complete with an imposing central clock tower, it was erected in 1844 to designs by Lewis Cubitt (1799–1883) and used initially as a customs house, with offices for the South East Railway Company and the Harbour Master, until its demolition in 1899.1
