Turner has used this page to make cursory jottings of a variety of figures, boats and objects. There is also a diminutive view of Ghent at the top, which includes the profiles of St Nicholas’s Church, the Belfry, and St Bavo Cathedral (see Tate D19869; Turner Bequest CCXVI 157a). The assorted figures and objects may also have been sketched at Ghent; they include locals wearing traditional cotton bonnets, a simple wooden carriage, and canal boats.
