Joseph Mallord William Turner A Castle or Mansion on a Ridge 1808

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 85 Verso:
A Castle or Mansion on a Ridge 1808
D07241
Turner Bequest CVI 82a
Pencil and pen and ink on white wove paper, 108 x 185 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. This is a more developed version of the quick pencil outline on folio 84 verso (D07239; Turner Bequest CVI 81a). Technically the drawing is uniform with that on folio 81 verso (D07233; Turner Bequest CVI 78a). In conversation with the author, Eric Shanes has suggested the large building is Belvoir Castle, which Turner could have passed earlier on his tour in 1808. Closer to Dovedale, and to the subject of 81 verso as also identified by Shanes, would be Haddon Hall.
