With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled with page with a perspective view take at an indeterminate location. The grid-like strokes on the right-hand side of the scene suggest a temporary structure in a formal garden such as a trellis. Similar objects appear on folio 53 verso opposite (D24270; Turner Bequest CCLVII 53a). Turner sketched many palace gardens around Paris and the Île-de-France in this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
