Made with the pages turned horizontally, the drawing is continued on folio 58 recto opposite (D40782).
It is one of a group of studies of boats in this book; see under folio 56 verso (D03707; Turner Bequest LXI 54a). They may have been used for reference when Turner was evolving his Thames Estuary subjects in the first decade of the nineteenth century.
Technical notes:
The leaf is discoloured from exposure. In 1909 Finberg noted a ‘Leaf cut out’ following the present page, cross-referring to ‘p. 61’,1 meaning the leaf bearing the other half of the study, since restored to its correct position.
