Folio 12 Verso:
A Man-of-War Firing a Broadside circa 1805
Turner Bequest LXXXVII 26
Pencil on cream laid paper, 118 x 185 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘26’ top right, inverted
Stamped in black ‘LXXXVII 26’ top right, inverted
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
See note to folio 10 of this sketchbook (D05404; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 29). This subject is continued on folio 13 (D05426; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 51), appearing inverted. When Ruskin broke up the sketchbook he split the two sections of this double-page spread, numbering the other ‘51’, thus destroying Turner’s study of a single ship firing her guns from her ports amidships. The portions were rejoined when the sketchbook was rebound in 1934.
