Joseph Mallord William Turner A Sailing Boat at Sea 1792-3

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
A Sailing Boat at Sea 1792–3
Turner Bequest XXIII S
Pencil on white wove paper, 198 x 222 mm
Stamped in black ‘XXIII S’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Plausibly grouped by Finberg with the coastal studies in pencil of about 1792–3, this careful drawing of rigging is consistent with Turner’s evident interest in marine subject matter at that moment. For other studies of boats probably made about this time see Tate D00400, D08190 and D40245 (Turner Bequest XXIII Z, CXIX C, XXIX E [verso]).
