With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a view of the junction of a French thoroughfare, presumably in Paris. Particular attention has been paid the mix of façades and the gentle incline of the tree-lined street. Turner made several sketches of Parisian streets in the present volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. These studies culminated in an engraving of a lively street scene in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04723.
