Except in showing a church on a hill, this view has nothing in common with that on D08970 (CXXVII 6), despite Finberg’s note to this effect; nor does either show Richmond, North Yorkshire. The first view is of East Grinstead, Sussex, and the present one possibly shows St Mary’s Church, Rye, although this is unconfirmed. For other Sussex subjects, see the Introduction to the sketchbook.
Technical notes:
This page is a face of one of the loose bifolio sheets which form the majority of the so-called Sandycombe and Yorkshire sketchbook, along with a few single leaves. The sheets were not bound, but folded inside each other in a sequence which is not entirely recoverable (see the sketchbook’s Introduction for a suggested order). When unfolded, this page is continuous with D08969 (CXXVII 5); the measurements given above are for the present work alone.
