The forms of four figures are suggested in the foreground of this sketch. In front of them is a town rising on a steep incline. The town stands on the other side of a bridge with a single spanning arch and a tall building with a tented roof attached to one side of it, of a type similar to that shown in Tate D20355 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 60). The town is nestled in the middle of a series of dramatic peaks that recede into the distance.
For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section Introduction.
Blank except for inscriptions. Inscribed in pencil ‘160’ top left, ascending vertically. Inscribed in ink ‘231 | O’ bottom right.
