This records the view from the Crook of Lune, looking down the river Lune towards Halton Mills. It is typical of Turner to notice passing picturesque interest such as the ‘Girl [driving] Cow to Milk’. This sketch, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is upside-down in relation to the main sequence (see the sketchbook’s Introduction).
For general notes on the Crook of Lune see under folio 72 recto (D11147). The present author has dated Turner’s sketches there to Thursday 8 August 1816.1
