Joseph Mallord William Turner A Village on the Channel Coast 1845

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 70 Verso:
A Village on the Channel Coast 1845
Turner Bequest CCCLXI 70a
Pencil on white wove paper, 86 x 111 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[?sand]’ towards top left
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, there are two studies of clusters of low buildings, probably showing different aspects of what Finberg called a ‘Fishing village’,1 presumably on a Channel coast. See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views scattered through it.
Finberg 1909, II, p.1173.
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
