Joseph Mallord William Turner A Water Mill 1807

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 57 Verso:
A Water Mill 1807
Turner Bequest C 52a
Pencil on off-white wove paper, 118 x 187 mm
Stamped in black ‘C 52a’ top right, inverted
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. This unidentified watermill, probably on the River Wey, served as the basis of the design (Tate D08140; Turner Bequest CXVII M) for the Liber Studiorum plate, The Water Mill, 1812. However, Turner’s sketch is so slight that in developing it, he must have added elements from imagination or memory.
