Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the most prominent feature of this sketch is a yacht, which is passing what appears to be a rowing boat containing vague shapes which may be several passengers; beyond are slight indications of masts and yards. Below to the right is a smaller study of sailing boats near a number of larger moored ships, the one on the left probably being a warship, underneath which Turner has written ‘3’, in sequence with similar numbered sketches on folios 65 verso and 66 verso (D18116, D18118).
For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the sketchbook Introduction.
