This study may relate to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The subject is an Alpine Gorge, with pencil drawing indicating a stream and a bridge, and watercolour wash in grey-browns and golden-yellow. In terms of the 1836 tour, it might feasibly relate to one of the places Turner visited that year, such as the gorge at Pre-Saint-Didier (for more information, see the entry for Tate D36240; Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 377), however, this is speculative.
