This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
Turner first visited the town of Aosta during his 1802 tour of the Alps. Returning in 1836, he not only made the two loose sketches relating to the town catalogued in the present section (for the other, see Tate D34898; Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 404), but also began a new sketchbook, the Fort Bard Sketchbook (see David Hill’s section within the present publication, Tate D2913–D29237, D29239–D29264, D29266–D29273, D29275–D29377, D41206–D41208; Turner Bequest CCXCIV).
Both this and the other view of Aosta catalogued here survey the town from a distance, with the dramatic mountain scenery forming a backdrop. A finished watercolour showing the town and surrounding landscape (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston1) also resulted from the 1836 tour.
