Some 110 miles from Paris, Auxerre could, as Hill suggests, well have been Turner’s first overnight stop after the capital. If so, the two related sketches in this sketchbook (see also folio 9, D04401) of the town seen from the walls would have been the products of an evening walk. The Clocher de St Jean, the Romanesque bell tower of the abbey of St Germain and other buildings are visible here.
