This view from the small Normandy town of Avranches out towards the island of Mont Saint-Michel was worked onto a sheet of white ‘Ivy Mill’ watermarked white paper, a batch of which Turner took with him on his 1826 tour of Northern France.1 A list of the other pencil studies of Mont Saint-Michel from that journey is provided in the Introduction to the Cherbourg, Coutances and Mont St Michel sketchbook.
