This drawing is taken from north-east of Winchelsea, from below Ferry Bridge across the Brede. Ferry House (now Ferry Farm House) is on the right. On the hill in the distance is the former St Leonard’s Mill while on the far left is the Pipewell Gate (also known as Ferry or Land Gate) at the top of Ferry Hill; see notes to folios 6 and 11 of the sketchbook (D05763, D05762; Turner Bequest XCII 44, 43).
