With the sketchbook orientated to landscape Turner has rendered a study of the Eosander Portal, the entrance to the western facade of Berlin’s palace (Schloss). Details of the Portal’s archway and Corinthian capitals (inscribed ‘Cor’) are recorded to the top left.
The other sketches show the Altes Museum, Schlossfreiheit, and Domkirche (Cathedral). ‘Ionic’ is inscribed by the entablature of the Cathedral to describe the order of columns in the portico.
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
