This is a view of Berlin taken before the Schlossbrücke. The prospect encompasses the Zeughaus (Old Arsenal) at left, the Neuer Packhof (central customs and tax office), the Altes Museum at centre, the Cathedral (Domkirche) and the Church of St Mary (Marienkirche). Turner has recorded the number of columns on the Altes Museum as ‘18’ in the Ionic order. Turner has also rendered separate sketches of figures and buildings.
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
