This is a prospect of the Unter den Linden, a tree-lined boulevard in the centre of Berlin. The Lustgarten, a pleasure garden once part of old palace, is at centre, with the Zeughaus (Arsenal), Altes Museum and Cathedral (Domkirche) surrounding it from left to right. Turner has inscribed the number ‘18’ above the Museum to indicate the exact number of columns which make up its portico; a cross also marks the position of the double staircase within the portico.
There is a separate detail of the Schloss’ façade in the sky at top left.
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
