Joseph Mallord William Turner Boats in Teignmouth Harbour 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 72 Recto:
Boats in Teignmouth Harbour 1811
Turner Bequest CXXIII 69
Pencil on white wove writing paper, 75 x 117 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘69’ bottom right, descending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CXXIII – 69’ bottom left, descending vertically
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The profile of the hill beyond suggests this is a view of Teignmouth harbour from the south. Arthur Ebdon refers to a drawing of ‘fishing boats in the harbour with Haldon Moor [to the north-west] in the background’, presumably the present work, which he also reproduces.1
For other views of Teignmouth see under folio 71 verso opposite (D08499; CXXIII 68a).
