Bolton’s ruined church is seen to the south across the intervening loop in the River Wharfe, from the vicinity of the road to Barden Tower (see folio 15 verso; D09860; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 59a). There is a similar view, framed by trees in the foreground, on folio 16 recto (D09876; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 75). For other views of the abbey see under folio 7 recto (D09874; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 73). There is a brief continuation of the trees to the left on folio 13 recto opposite (D09848; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 51a).
Verso:
Blank, save for inscriptions: by John Ruskin in red ink ‘921’ bottom left; and in pencil ‘113’ centre. The sheet is rubbed or stained at the top left, presumably as a result of being stuck down for display. This is one of eight drawings from this sketchbook lent to Oxford University in the nineteenth century (for the others see the sketchbook’s Introduction). Each has a large pencil number inscribed on the back which presumably relates to this loan, although they do not tally with the Oxford catalogue numbers.
