The upper and central sketches depict the Burg Maus overlooking Wellmich on the Rhine. The steeple of St Martin’s Church at Wellmich can be seen at left in the central view. Castle Maus and Wellmich are depicted in numerous sketches across the Turner Bequest, including: Tate D12931, D12962–D12964, D28512, D30549–D30551, D35185, D35215; Turner Bequest CLXI 27, 43–44, CCXC 80a, CCCIII 46a–47a, CCCLI 8a, 23a.
The rear sketch shows the Rhine looking in the direction of Eltville and Schloss Johannisberg (inscribed ‘Johburg’) in the Rheingau (see Tate D29737; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 72a and The Johannisberg, a watercolour of 1817 in the collection of the British Museum, London).
