Joseph Mallord William Turner Burg Thurandt c.1839

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Burg Thurandt c.1839
Turner Bequest CCXXII H
Gouache and watercolour on blue wove paper, 139 x 191 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram bottom right
Stamped in black ‘CCXXII H’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Owing to its lack of finish relative to the majority of Turner’s 1839 Meuse-Moselle gouaches, this small colour drawing is likely a preliminary work or may have been left deliberately undeveloped. The handling and colouring is similar to the two other gouaches of Alken and the Burg Thurandt (Tate D20223, D29023; Turner Bequest CCXX P, CCXCII 72).
Stamped in black with Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXXII–H’ bottom left; inscribed in pencil ‘CCXXII H’ bottom right.
