Turner had made a study of Cardiff Castle from across the River Taf, showing more of the bridge, during his tour of South Wales in 1795; see the Smaller South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00471; Turner Bequest XXV 10). A finished watercolour based on that drawing is Tate D00702 (Turner Bequest XXVIII Q). He evidently considered the subject suitable for further investigation, but seems never to have completed another picture of the castle.
Technical notes:
There are some red and grey paint smears along the lower and right edges.
Blank; inscribed in a later hand in pencil ‘45’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
