With the page turned horizontally, the subject is the medieval Castel Trostburg (now a museum), high above the east bank of the River Isarco (Eisack) at Ponte Gardena (Waidbruck); the castle is seen from the valley, looking south-east, and the craggy hillside is now thick with trees.
Ponte Gardena is about three south-east of Chiusa (Klausen) and the Sabiona (Säben) monastery (possibly seen on folio 75 verso; D31564) near Bressanone (Brixen; perhaps shown on folios 60 verso and 66 verso; D31534, D31546), and roughly ten miles north-east of Bolzano (Bozen; see folio 69 recto; D31551).
Compare the similar drawing in the Venice up to Trento (Tate D31704; Turner Bequest CCCXII 54a), made from slightly further north on Turner’s return journey; that book also contains further sketches of the castle and the other places mentioned.
