The subject of this sketch is a view of Castellammare di Stabia (formerly Castellamare, or Castel a Mare), on the Sorrentine peninsula. Turner’s viewpoint is from a boat on the sea to the west looking towards the port and bay. On the slopes of the hill to the left is the ninth-century castle from which the city derives its name. For a fuller description and further studies of Castellammare see folio 39 verso (D15812).
