Made from the Castle Wynd this sketch looks south down Mars Place. The building with crow-step gables at the left is Argyll’s Lodging, a seventeenth-century town house (now open to visitors). There appears to be a figure standing in the doorway. The buildings opposite it to the right no longer stand, but behind them, mainly obscured, is the Mars Works (see folio 54; D26361) and behind that is the Parish Church of the Holy Rude, its tower rising above the roofs. Turner has also drawn a little outline sketch of the church at the top of the page. At the bottom right of the page is a written reference to the ‘Mars Works’ followed by an indecipherable word (perhaps a name) and the initials ‘JP&A’. This page follows two further pages with sketches of the church and nearby buildings: folios 53 verso (D26360) and 54.
For a full list of Turner’s sketches of Stirling see folio 44 verso (D26342).
