With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner lightly worked several studies of the roofline of Nantes onto this page. The large towered structure on the right-hand side of these scenes has been identified as the gothic cathedral, north of the River Loire.1 The cathedral recurs on several pages in this volume.
