This is evidently the study on which the watercolour commissioned by John Landseer (private collection)1 was based; see the list of ‘Order’d Drawings’ on the flyleaf (D41250). The watercolour was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1796 (699), and published by Selby Whittingham in 1986. A drawing of Chale church is on folio 28 (D00435; Turner Bequest XXIV 27).
