This colour beginning of the prominence beside the River Loire upon which sits the Château de Clermont is worked onto a sheet of paper with an 1829 watermark. However it closely related to an earlier colour study on blue paper in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford1 and is based upon pencil sketches in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook (Tate D23170; Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 10a) which he collected on his 1826 tour of Northern France.
Andrew Wilton, J.M.W. Turner: His Life and Work, Fribourg 1979, p.417 no.991.
Technical Notes:
The sheet is stained with grey marks round the edges and bears vertical crease marks down the centre where it has been folded.
The sheet is inscribed in pencil with the initials of Turner’s executors, Charles Lock Eastlake and John Prescott Knight. In ink, the initials of a third executor, Henry Scott Trimmer, are also inscribed alongside the note ‘138 X’. The sheet is stamped in black with the Turner Bequest monogram and the number ‘CCCLXV – 31’.
