Joseph Mallord William Turner Chepstow Castle from the North 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 19 Verso:
Chepstow Castle from the North 1798
D01624
Turner Bequest XL 93
Pencil on white wove paper, 135 x 95 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This leaf (now folio 19) and the next were originally placed much further on in the sketchbook, and given the page numbers 93 and 94; the present drawing is continued on folio 20 recto opposite (D01626; Turner Bequest XL 94). They were rebound so as to follow the drawing of Chepstow Castle on the opening immediately preceding this, folios 17 verso–18 recto (D01491–D01492). This is a somewhat more detailed treatment of the subject. For Turner’s use of Chepstow in finished works see the entry for D01491.
The recto is blank, but stamped in black ‘XL – 93’, followed by ‘93–4’ in pencil, and with a pencil note to ‘Place after 18’ in the hand of British Museum curator A.M. Hind; see also the Technical notes in the sketchbook’s Introduction. (Tate accession number D01625, originally part of the run of numbers applied to this sketchbook, has been cancelled, and it appears that D01624 would originally have applied to the recto.)
