The uppermost view shows the castle of Chokier, taken by Turner as he returned back to Liège on 15 August after his brief visit to Huy (see Tate D20080; Turner Bequest CCXVI 270). Turner records that a ‘Rainbow’ appeared over Chokier as he sketched it, its arc suggested in tentative line at far right. Within its spectrum Turner writes that the ‘Pink’ and ‘Green’ shone brightest in the light. For more drawings of Chokier and its chateau see Tate D1961–D19618, D19635, D20085; Turner Bequest CCXVI 30a–34, 43, CCXVII 1a.
With the sketchbook orientated to landscape, Turner has sketched a view of the quayside at Liège near the ancient Pont des Arches. Figures can be seen loading and unloading wares from barges and other craft which plied the Meuse daily. For other views of the Pont des Arches see Tate D19637–D19638, D20061, D20063–D20064, D20096–D20101, D28066, D28076, D29670; Turner Bequest CCXVI 44–44a, 260a, 261a–262, CCXVII 8a–11, CCLXXXVII 13, 18, CCXCVI 38.
