As David Wallace-Hadrill and Janet Carolan have suggested, these coastal cliffs resemble those around Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven, which Turner sketched on folio 55 verso of this sketchbook (D27118).1 Turner made the sketches during his sea journey from Aberdeen to Edinburgh at the end of his 1831 tour of Scotland.
