Folio 4 Verso:
Cliffs on the Coast 1845
Turner Bequest CCCLV 4a
Pencil on blue wove paper, 186 x 70 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[?Tul...] R’ towards top right, ‘[...]’ above centre, ‘R[?y]’ centre right, ‘[...]’ towards bottom left.
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The sketches on this page are inverted relative to the foliation. They continue on the opposite page, folio 5 recto (D35342), depicting sections of a cliff coastline. Turner’s employs rough hatching to indicate the uneven contours of the cliffs and the beach formations which surround them. Punctuating the sketches are some rather indecipherable inscriptions, possibly referencing sites or place names in shorthand.
Technical notes:
Apparently adventitious white chalk markings appear around the centre of the page.
