With the sketchbook turned upright, Turner has produced a study of the clouds and a low sun over the Baltic. The colour notes ‘Pink’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Red’ and ‘Orange’ are inscribed around the view. With the sketchbook turned horizontally the artist has recorded two views of headland on the Baltic. One is rendered in four instalments (numbered ‘1’ to ‘4’ with the note ‘Water Dark the Land Red’). The second view is rendered at bottom right, in two instalments, and is inscribed ‘Gr[...]’ (possibly Greifswald on the Baltic).
