This cloud study was probably taken near the coast of Holland, around Brielle (see Tate D32471–D32472, D32476, D32535; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 14a–15, 17, 54a). The skies appear stormy and Turner has inscribed the note ‘Wind’ at top left.

Inscribed in red ink by Ruskin ‘16’ and stamped in black ‘CCCXXI–16’, bottom right.
