Turner Bequest CCLXVIII 71a

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
These two sketches of the coast from the sea belong to a series of coastal sketches across folios 70 verso–77 verso (D26228–D26242) that were made on Turner’s return journey from Edinburgh to London by sea. On the reverse of this page are sketches of Flamborough Head in Yorkshire from the north (folio 71; D26229), and it is possible that the lower sketch on this page is a view of the headland from the south. The sketch at the top of the page of a boat sailing past a cliff is very similar to the sketch at the top of folio 70 verso (D26228).
There is a brown stain at the top right of the page.
