This loose and swiftly rendered sketch depicts Colchester Castle in the county of Essex (see Tate D18166; Turner Bequest CCIX 4a and Tate impressions T04511–T04512 produced for the England and Wales print series from a watercolour now in the Courtauld Institute Gallery).1
