Made with the page turned horizontally, this study is related to the finished watercolour exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800, View of the Gothic Abbey (afternoon) now building at Fonthill, the seat of William Beckford Esq. (private collection);1 see also the Fonthill sketchbook (Tate D02184; Turner Bequest XLVII 7). Other Fonthill Abbey composition studies are on folios 106 verso and 113 recto of the present book (D02152, D02162).
