With the page turned horizontally, Turner has copied a painting by the French artist Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665). Poussin’s picture, now in the National Gallery, London, was in the collection of Sir Watkin Williams-Wynne throughout Turner’s lifetime. A copy from another work by Poussin, The Exposition of Moses, is on folio 118 recto (D02172).
