With the page turned horizontally, Deal Castle is seen to the north beyond a windmill above the beach, with boats drawn up in the foreground. To the left, the cupola belongs to the Napoleonic Royal Naval Hospital, later part of the Royal Marine Depot and now flats off the Strand just within the neighbouring parish of Walmer south-west of the castle, which is obscured by later houses from this angle.
Whether through uncertainty as to which castle is shown or the status of the boundary, Finberg identified the setting as ‘Deal (? Walmer)’.1 There is a prospect from further off on folio 279 recto opposite (D19393), and views of the similar Walmer Castle, a little over a mile south, on folios 279 verso–280 verso (D19394–D19396). For other views of Deal on adjacent pages and elsewhere, see under folio 273 recto (D19382), and see the sketchbook’s Introduction for discussion of its many shipping studies.
